On March 9th, the first teaser poster for the August blockbuster Suicide Squad (2016) hit Twitter. The promotion only went up from there. From Harley Quinn’s Tattoo Parlor featured at #SXSW and #SDCC to the #JokerWasHere takeover, to Snapchat lenses, to so many character posters, this squad took over the internet for a few months. Here’s a fun list of all the creative promotional stunts Warner Bros pushed out before their August release.
1. Harley Quinn’s Tattoo Parlor
Whether it was #SXSW, Coachella or #SDCC, Harley’s Tattoo Parlor was all across the country this summer. Partnering with both local and large brands like Samsung, the squad’s logos and faces were plastered everywhere at this year’s Comic-Con.
The Joker (Jared Leto) took over social media one day, “spray painting” both actors, director and fans’ photos as an introduction to audiences world-wide.
3. Snapchat, Snapchat and more Snapchat
Their graphics team did an amazing job at the Snapchat filters for Independence Day and Harley Quinn.
4. Suicide Squad: The Album
Fans have repeatedly said that the soundtrack for the film is better than the film itself. At this point, the album has stayed at the top of Billboard’s album charts for it’s second week in theaters (1). What is fascinating about the album is a “motley crew” who appeals to all different types of music lovers. Featuring known artists like Twenty One Pilots, Lil Wayne, Eminem, and Imagine Dragons and mixing in newcomers Kevin Gates and Kehlani brings a twist to your everyday movie soundtrack. Not the mention the modern spin on Bohemian Rhapsody performed by Panic! At The Disco. There is something on the album for everyone!
5. Posters on Posters on Posters
It felt as though each week a different character poster was being released. In reality, it was probably every two weeks, but still Warner Bros did a great job at keeping fans engaged by releasing all types of “new content” featuring relatively the same content from the week before.
see? relatively the same content, but all grab your attention.
At attempts of reaching famous meme creators like Straight Outta Compton‘s (2015) “Straight Outta Somewhere” that went viral last summer, Suicide Squad‘s #SquadYourself was a clever way for fans to create their own skull. The same designs were used for both the characters in the film and artists on the soundtrack.
7. Jared Leto, just Jared Leto
8. Harley Therapy
9. The Puppet Master
10. #SuicideSquadPremiere & Block Party
Instead of having a “normal” press tour, the squad had to throw it’s own block party in Miami featuring Will Smith rapping, a giant mural of squad art, and an appearance of the entire cast – among other things. The U.S. premiere of the film had it’s own hashtag and live twitter stream of the premiere. The entire cast, except Jared Leto, took over Good Morning America, making for quite the entrance on a Friday morning.
What did you think of the promotion? Were the really effective with their “SKWAAAAD” marketing? Let me know in the comments!
